Since the fall of 2008, managers in energy companies have been challenged to turn out quality work but keep the headcount down.  Also firms have been loath to add any type of staff after going through general corporate downsizing.

The answer for some has been consulting resources. 

That has not always worked out well because the typical large consulting firm has to charge a significant fee, even for smaller projects.  In addition, they frequently assign junior staff, thereby lengthening the project as the juniors move up the learning curve.

So costs are higher, and the length of project can be longer.

Many managers, especially those in risk management and risk systems, have sought out senior specialists they know to take on specific consulting tasks.  Once they find that the specialist is productive, they move them from project to project, even though the specialist may have to come up to speed a bit.

Our approach, because we know a number of senior consultants in various specialties, is to connect those consultants with our energy client base.  This service will be provided by Energy Risk Resources, a Rockwood affiliate.

We operate in three ways:

• Work with clients to develop a short request for proposal for consulting services;
• Take on research assignments to identify and get references on  those consulting specialists who can best respond to a client’s specific need;
• Show clients on a targeted, periodic basis a list of featured consultants, their specialties and examples of past engagements.

The featured consultants will be specialists who operate as solo practitioners or in small firms. 

Typically, they have lengthy backgrounds in energy firms performing many of the duties for which they now provide consulting services.  Because of this experience, they can discuss and structure deliverables that are extremely cost-effective.

Rockwood will provide a one-source solution to clients who wish to have various consultants operating through one contract.
