Senior Quantitative Analyst

Client is looking for an experienced, sophisticated analyst to be responsible for quantitative and analytical model design for a large, multi-product risk group.  This person would be the lead analytical resource.

This role is responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining risk measurement and valuation models, including forward price curves, correlation matrices and volatility surfaces.

The position is located in the metropolitan New York area.

Clearly a responsible position, it has both the responsibilities of a highly visible position and the opportunities available to such a person.

Qualifications

A capacity for critical thought and ability to communicate with broad range of people about complex issues.

5+ years experience as a quantitative analyst with the energy market, specializing in a risk, valuation, or modeling function

Familiarity with the entire energy complex with a focus on crude, products, power and natural gas.

Strong understanding of stochastic calculus & applied mathematics, derivatives (futures/swaps/options), and risk measures (e.g., Greeks, volatilities, correlations, Value-at-Risk, stress testing)

Experience with implementing models to adapt flat or incomplete market forward price data to create a model-based forward price curve.

Expertise in energy option valuation.

Complete familiarity with all alternative approaches to calculating Value-at-Risk (VaR) and a demonstrated ability to understand the benefits and weaknesses of the various approaches.

Senior Quantitative Analyst --Job 1704ws

FTR Analyst

The client is a strong physical/financial trading group in the Midwest, which has continued to profit in power and natural gas markets, even in a difficult environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for the analyst with 2 or more years of experience who wants to move into a trading role in the future and really understands the transmission grid.

The client has strong analytical talent on board, but those resources are committed to other FTR markets.  So this position will focus on NY, NE and California.

Since the congestion market in California is new, a strong background in the other two may suffice if the individual can demonstrate past success in analyzing a new region. Or, it could be a specialist in California markets that wants to leverage his or her experience.

Candidates need not have traded before, but must show that they can operate in the fast-moving trading world.

Candidates must have at least 2+ years experience in the power industry with a main focus on LMP markets..

A MS degree or PhD in engineering or physical science with excellent math skills is expected, plus in depth experience in analyzing transmission markets.

Job content:
FTR, Congestion Analysis, Transmission Analysis, Trading Ideas,  Western Markets, CAISO, NY-ISO, ISO-NE, Quantitative Analysis, Financial Engineering, Wholesale Power.
FTR Analyst  --Job 1681ws

Power Portfolio Analyst

Client Background:

The firm is a major presence in the physical power business.  Located in the Midwest, it continues to grow.
This position is open because of an internal promotion.

Position: Power Portfolio Analyst (Could be classified as Senior Analyst)

The position is part of the firm?s front-office structuring and portfolio analysis group, and reports to the manager of this group.

This is an excellent opportunity because of the growth of the firm as well as the diversity and complexity of the problems to be solved.  The position is open because of an internal promotion.

This position will be responsible for the development, maintenance, and enhancement of models that simulate a portfolio of physical load, physical generation and market conditions. The analyst will interact with clients to identify portfolio risk exposures and develop hedging strategies that support business objectives.

There is no programming involved.  Client uses a popular optimization-based modeling system that has stochastic capability to enable a thorough analysis.

Background Required

This type of portfolio analysis is not equivalent to a long-term fundamental analysis exercise where someone is seeking to determine the value of a generation unit based on market fundamentals.

This is more about deep diving into the supply stack of multiple generation facilities of different types, understanding how each contributes to serving load, what the economics are of the entire stack, and what risks are embedded in a particular stack.

So, the ideal candidate must have dealt with portfolios of power assets, their behavior and how to compare what the model ?says? with the actual world.

Candidates might come from either end of a spectrum of skill sets:

1) someone who?s quite competent with one of the popular models: PROSIM, UPLAN, GE-MAPS, GenTrader, or AURORA and who has applied these programs to problems requiring an understanding of power generation and power markets to some degree.

2) someone who?s very accomplished in power markets----analyzing supply stacks, generation types and dispatch issues, as well as forward power markets over a 1-5 year time horizon, and is familiar---but not yet expert?in using one of the models cited above.

A masters degree is desired, but a BS in a technical discipline will be considered.

Candidate would need three or more years in the energy industry in some relevant function.

Job content: Power, Portfolio Analysis, Generation, Analytics, fundamental analysis.
Power Portfolio Analyst --Job 1692ws

Power Market Analyst

Client Background:

This position is open because the prior incumbent was promoted to another area of the company, and the manager is seeking another fast-track professional to fill that person?s shoes.

Unlike other fundamental analysis roles, this has exposure to senior management.  The position is found within the firm?s finance group, and is part of a team that provides data for key financial projections.

This individual will be responsible for tracking market developments, forecasting market prices, conducting market analyses, and forecasting gross margins.

For someone who has a technical background, the position offers the ability to broaden his or her background into the financial realm, and pick up a number of financial analysis/business analysis skills.

The position reports to an outstanding manager, who has a strong grasp of analytics and business, and who has been successful in mentoring staff.

Location: Metropolitan Area-Northeast  US

The duties include:

Tracking fuel, emission, and power market developments, and updating internal assumptions.

Developing forecasts of fuel, emission and power prices, using both in-house fundamental models and external market sources.

Analyzing the potential market impact of prospective changes in rules, supply, demand, or transmission projects.

Forecasting the profitability of the firm?s portfolio of generating units, load contracts and hedges.

Forecasting profitability of third-party assets or development opportunities.

Education Desired: Bachelors degree in Engineering, Economics, or other quantitative discipline.

Required Competencies:

At least 3 years of experience in wholesale power market analysis

Ability and willingness to learn production cost modeling ? prior experience strongly preferred (e.g. Promod, Prosym, Aurora, UPlan, etc.)

Understanding of generation technology, wholesale power markets (incl. LMP construct, ancillary services and capacity markets), environmental regulation, and market design

Very strong quantitative analytical skills

Advanced computer skills, including advanced Excel, relational databases, and ability to use quantitative tools and models.

Job content: Finance, Financial Analysis, Power, Portfolio Analysis, Generation, Analytics, fundamental analysis.
